A selection of pictures of things I see and experience living in South Africa

About me

I live in Johannesburg, South Africa. I have an interest in photography and use both digital and film. In film I use mainly black and white. I will probably continue to do so for as long as film remains available. Digital is certainly quicker and more efficient, but there is just something about film that is different from a digital image. I also enjoy the way that a film camera works and feels as opposed to a digital camera. There is an element of satisfaction achieved in creating an image using a 70 year old, all mechanical, medium format camera. These cameras have a personality of their own.

A steam train coming into the old Steam Shed at Germiston, Gauteng, South Africa. A group of volunteers are restoring and maintaining these ladies. From time to time they fire them up and invite photographers as part of their initiatives to collect funds to further their cause. You can find more information on URL: http://www.reefsteamers.com

Rocks at Buffalo Bay. On the left is a picture of some rocks at Buffalo Bay, South Cape, South Africa. Buffalo Bay is pretty much a holiday town surrounded by beaches, rock pools and the sea. I couldn’t find a credible explanation as to why it is called Buffalo Bay. Though zoned as a nature reserve, there are no buffalo. There may have been Cape Buffalo many years ago.  This picture was made by way of a long exposure made possible by a small aperture and neutral density filter. Click here for an enlarged version. Rock Pool at Buffalo Bay. On the left is a picture of one of the rock pools at Buffalo bay taken just before sunset. I liked the form of the clouds and the reflection of light on the surface of the water. The tide was still coming in and had not yet disturbed the water in the rock pools, resulting in a smooth mirror like surface. Click here for an enlarged version. (Linked to flickr)

Johannesburg at sunset. On the left is a picture of Johannesburg at sunset. The picture was taken during winter. There were a number of veld fires raging at the time resulting in a lot of smoke in the atmosphere. The smoke resulted in the sunset turning extra red. I exposed for the light, turning the city into silhouette. Click here for an enlarged version. (Linked to flickr)
